History of the CNA:

A lot of people ask about the origins of netball in California, so here is a brief overlook of the California Netball Association.

Back in 2000, Sharon Fluxman from South Africa, started the CNA  with a Thousand Oaks based team she named "The Comets". She began talks with local Recreation & Parks authorities to promote netball in California.

Past Presidents of the CNA

1999-2001    Sharon Fluxman (Founder), Comets

2001-2002    Jennie Zarraonandia, Comets

2002-2005    Karen Walker, Comets

2005            Helen Dwight, Southern Stars

The CNA currently has four member clubs - The San Francisco based Stars, the Los Angeles Waves, the Thousand Oaks Comets and San Diego United. With more than three member clubs, the CNA  is now an official and visible member of USANA, the governing body of netball in the USA.  We have established excellent relations with USANA and consequently access to umpiring exams, national trials, tournaments, and at some point in the future, sponsorship and programs for schools.

To date, the CNA has been based in Thousand Oaks simply because this is where Sharon lived and she was the initial driving force of netball in California.

Each year at the AGM,  we encourage member clubs to put forward nominations for positions on the CNA  committee - we currently have representation from all four member clubs - and our goal is to achieve a well-balanced committee each year.

Here are some reasons clubs choose to maintain membership of the CNA:

  • Membership of USANA

  • Insurance

  • Information (CNA Newsletter) advertising (a recent development and excellent resource)

  • Annual tournament and fixtures

  • Rule books

  • Umpiring exams

  • National trials

  • A dedicated netball court for use by all (and hopefully more courts to come)

The list of current committee members can be found here.

The C.N.A extends a huge thank you to Sharon Fluxman for all the hard work, encouragement, commitment, enthusiasm and support in getting netball off the ground in California.
